HOW TO SELECT THE RIGHT NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHER:

Townsville Studio Newborn Photographer

Selecting a newborn photographer can be overwhelming!

In an oversaturated market, it has become increasingly difficult to find someone who you can trust with your brand-new baby.

Unfortunately, because it is an unregulated industry, there are many inexperienced photographers who practice unsafe methods, putting newborns at risk every day.

There are many important factors to consider when looking for a professional newborn photographer and I have a few tips to help you make the right decision.

Personality

I believe that if you connect with your photographer, you will feel comfortable and confident throughout your session.

They should be able to answer all your questions easily and have a system in place to make the process nice and easy.

For reassurance, it may be beneficial for you to read some reviews/testimonials about the photographer too!

Professionalism

All photographers should have public liability insurance to protect you and your family, should anything unforeseen was to happen during your session.

A professional business will be fully insured and registered.

Experience & Safety

It is extremely important to understand how to pose a newborn safely and how to identify/avoid potential risks. Safety is paramount!

A trained expert will ensure that your baby is warm, comfortable, and supported always. Babies mustn’t be left unattended.

All props used, must be suitable for photography purposes and anything top-heavy should contain weights.

Where necessary, a spotter should be used (a dedicated assistant or parent).

They will also wear their camera strap around their neck (especially when photographing from above).

If you see a more complex portrait, it is most likely a composite (where multiple photographs are taken and stitched together in Photoshop).

Health

The health of your baby is vital!

Confirm that your photographer has received First Aid and CPR training.

As you are probably aware, babies are unable to receive all their vaccinations prior to their first photography experience so ensure to check that your photographer has been immunised, especially against Whooping Cough.

Budget

Over the years, I’ve heard many stories from parents about their unfortunate experiences (and 9/10 it’s because they went to someone inexperienced, leading to major disappointment).

Whilst your budget should be considered, it shouldn’t be the only reason why you book someone.

The cost of a newborn photographer may vary but a professional will be more expensive due to experience and business expenditures.

At the very least, your photographer should have insurance, registration, decent equipment, a website, office and editing software, training/updated qualifications, and a marketing system to find you! The list goes on.

The way I look at it – everything we buy for our kids is disposable but photos last forever. You get what you pay for.

Style

This one is huge for me! Will their style of photography suit your home? Should it be printed to display?

A consistent style and portfolio containing high-quality images will help you to understand what they can offer.

Products

Think about what you would like to achieve from your session overall.

A professional should be able to offer you digital collections and tangible heirloom products.

Technology is changing consistently so your USB or backup system will corrupt/become outdated.

Therefore, it is important to print your photos!

Professionals work closely with their preferred lab to ensure that your photos are printed to an exceptional standard, using the highest quality materials.

They should also be able to offer you a product to suit your lifestyle/space, whether it be an album to display all the images from your session, a canvas, frame, or polished acrylic...

That’s pretty much it!

I hope this has been helpful and has given you a few things to think about. If you have any other questions, feel free to connect!

Much love, Jodi
