I love that all babies are different during their session 🙂 Griffin was quite active and had lots of awake time during his shoot so after we captured some adorable eye contact, I wrapped him up nice and secure and rocked him gently so that we could get some sleepy shots that were requested. His stunning mumma Abbey came in whilst pregnant with Griffin so that I could capture her bump before his arrival also so it was amazing to have her back in <3

If you are considering a maternity and newborn photography experience, please get in touch soon as 2018 bookings are extremely limited. Just fill out your details on my contact page (click here) and I will be in touch soon!

The Client Experience

How has your experience been with JC imagery and how did Jodi make you feel? Our experience with Jodi was lovely! Not only was she very accommodating and patient with our little one, but her professionalism and photography skills are superb!

Why did you choose JC imagery? Jodi did such an amazing job with my maternity photos that I couldn’t resist bringing my bubba in to see her once he arrived. Her props and little outfits are super cute too!

Highlights…

What was the highlight of your session? The highlight of the session was watching my son and his daddy have their photos taken together… the two people I love most in this world.. these photos I will treasure!

Our story

Is there a story surrounding your pregnancy? Was it a breeze or did you little one make you work for it? My pregnancy with Griffin went very smoothly up until the last few weeks… He was super comfy in my tummy and decided that he wanted to stay in there as long as possible, not coming earthside until after 42 weeks! Despite my eagerness to meet him and my desire to have my body back, he was sooo worth the wait!!

The details

Did you find out whether you were having a boy or a girl? Or do you love a surprise? We found out we were having a little boy when I was 11 weeks pregnant through the Harmony NeoNatal test which examines the baby’s chromosomes. Daddy wanted to wait and have it be a surprise but I couldn’t resist!

How did you go choosing your baby’s name? After months of not agreeing on any names Darren and I eventually came across “Griffin” in a baby name book.. We wanted a name that was both masculine and unique and decided it was meant to be. Griffin’s middle name “Beau” he shares with his big brother “Liam Beau”.

Preparation

What are your favourite baby stores? I decided while pregnant that I wanted to buy as many Australian made, organic and eco friendly baby products as I could find. My favourite stores were ‘Owl Baby‘ and ‘Rainbow Tree‘. In Adelaide there are also ‘Magic Circle‘, ‘David Jones‘ and of course ‘Baby Bunting‘.

Did you prepare the nursery in advance or wing it last minute? By 25 weeks Griffin’s nursery was pretty much complete which allowed me to focus on resting for the remainder of my pregnancy.

Tips

Do you have any tips for expecting mums? The only advice I can share for expecting mumma’s that I found beneficial was to see a chriopractor in the last few weeks of my pregnancy. Mine was a godsend, relieving my sciatica almost instantly.

Do you have any tips and tricks for parents adjusting to parenthood in those early days? Ensure you have precooked meals in the freezer for easy lunches and dinners after bubs arrives and don’t forget to sleep when the baby sleeps!

My Experience at a Maternity & Newborn Workshop

My Experience at a Maternity & Newborn Workshop

I attended Anja McDonald’s Maternity and Newborn Workshop on the Gold Coast over the weekend and really wanted to share my personal experience with you all!

This workshop by far was the most enjoyable and educational experience I’ve ever had. Anja is incredibly humble, welcoming and open to teaching us her extensive knowledge about photography and how to run a successful business.

The reason why I decided to attend?

I feel that it is incredibly important throughout our career to expand our knowledge as much as possible and explore every avenue. I specifically wanted to focus on maternity posing using artificial light (as I have previously been a natural light photographer) and look at new business/marketing strategies. Anja’s workshop was a perfect choice.

An in-person workshop allows the opportunity to share an experience with other like-minded people who share your passion. It was great to make some new friends and have fun in the process! It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner or more experienced photographer because Anja ensures to spend time with each student individually too.

Along with learning different techniques to style and pose, Anja shared her business secrets and post-production tips which were extremely helpful! I have walked away from that experience with a business plan, so much more knowledge and an awesome goodie bag filled with products from my favourite vendors! Haha

Anja is so patient and supportive; she provides ongoing support to keep you on track even after the workshop has been completed which I find incredibly helpful. She truly wants everyone to succeed.

I am so passionate about providing my clients with the best experience and love to exceed their expectations, this is why Anja’s workshop is by far the best investment I have made for my career and I will continue to improve/update my skills and business regularly.

I recommend that you check out her mentoring program and workshop dates if you are looking to take your business and imagery to the next level. Here is the link for further information about mentoring/workshops with Anja: https://anjamcdonald.com.au/mentoring/

I have put together a short slideshow to display some images captured during a newborn session. Each experience is calm and relaxed so you can sit back and enjoy the moment while we create lifelong memories and beautiful pieces of art…

Newborns grow and change so much over those first few weeks so I feel that it is incredibly important to take this moment and freeze it in time. Many new parents have told me that they can barely remember all the details because so much happens & so much doesn’t (like a good nights sleep)! I guarantee that you will cherish each image more than you could ever imagine.

Safety is key!

I know that there would be nothing more daunting to hand your new baby over to a complete stranger but please know, I am a trained professional. I understand the techniques necessary to pose safely, how to identify potential risks and how to avoid them.
During your experience, I promise to ensure that your little one is kept warm, comfortable and content in the studio at all times and will take extra care when positioning them (safety is key)! All products used also, are carefully washed/cleaned thoroughly to ensure a hygienic and germ-free environment. This is why I am also fully-vaccinated.

What to do next?

I love to meet all my newborn clients for a complimentary consultation prior to the birth of their new addition, that way we can get to know each other and take the stress out of organising your session. I believe that during this time, it is necessary to make the process nice and easy and we get to arrange all the beautiful little details in person.
If this is something you would love to arrange with me or you are after more information about our packages and collections, please click here and I will contact you as soon as possible.
Thank you so much and I look forward to hearing from you!

The Experience

How has your experience been with JC imagery and how did Jodi make you feel?

The moment Jodi opened up the door to her home studio I felt incredibly welcomed and comfortable. Jodi not only demonstrated high professionalism but was wonderfully friendly, calm and patient during our newborn session. She’s got an eye for detail and beautiful taste in all her props and accessories. The entire experience was perfect and faultless. I am so happy with the end result and will cherish the photos Jodi took forever. Thank you so much Jodi, I will be a returning customer and highly recommend JC Imagery to everyone.

What was the highlight of your session?

When Jodi had my son in the wood log pose. He looked so peaceful and picture perfect, I watched over him with such pride. I was completely blown away by how amazing Jodi made the setting look. It was my favourite photo of the day.

Our Story

Is there a story surrounding your pregnancy? Was it a breeze or did your little one make you work for it?

Aside from extremely bad reflux, it was a fairly easy-going pregnancy.

How did you find out whether you were having a boy or a girl? Or was it a total surprise?

It was supposed to be a surprise but on our 17-week ultrasound the sonographer slipped up!

How did you come up with your baby’s name? And did you have other names that you used while your new baby was still in the womb)?

Early on we discussed baby names together and both came across the name Flynn. We loved it and it stuck!

Advice

Tell me your favourite stores that you are obsessed with shopping at (this may help other parents prepare for their new miracle).

Daisy and Hen
Wilson and Frenchy
Pure Baby
Little Fawn Boutique

How far in advance did you prepare the nursery? Or did you wing it last minute?
We moved house the following week after Flynn’s birth. The nursery was completely last minute, but I was very prepared for buying everything he needed before he arrived.

Do you have any tips for expecting mums?
Download BabyCenter and Ovia Pregnancy on your mobile. Both apps I found really helpful during my pregnancy. It also gives you the opportunity to talk to other expecting mums.

Tips & Tricks

Do you have any tips and tricks for parents adjusting to parenthood in those early days?

Sleep when the baby sleeps, housework can wait.
Ask for help and accept it.
Follow your heart, not advice. Mother’s instinct is best.
Don’t compare yourself to others.
Be kind to yourself.

The client experience

How has your experience been with JC imagery and how did Jodi make you feel?

Excellent! Yes – we have told all of our friends and anyone who has commented on our photos. Jodi made us feel amazing – at ease, comfortable and relaxed. We had a lot of laughs during the shoot – at everyone’s expense! Haha

Is there a story surrounding your pregnancy? Was it a breeze or did your little one make you work for it?

Our baby girl was the boss from day 1. My partner Jason knew that I was pregnant before the test was positive. I was terribly sick for the first 5 months – which didn’t completely disappear through the remainder of the pregnancy. I could eat something one day then not be able to stomach it the next. I also had really swollen feet and hands!

About

Did you find out whether you were having a boy or a girl? Or was it a total surprise?

Total surprise! We found out when she was lifted up onto me – Jason had a hunch that she was a girl all along… My mum thought I was having a boy but changed her mind later on in the pregnancy.

How did you come up with your baby’s name? And did you have other names that you used while your new baby was still in the womb)?

‘Bubs’ and ‘little one’ was used while Tilly was in the womb… We chose two names; one for a boy and one for a girl… When our baby girl arrived, I really liked the name Tilly and so did Jason so that is what we went with!

How far in advance did you prepare the nursery? Or did you wing it last minute?

We just did bits and bobs throughout the pregnancy. The cot arrived after the birth of Tilly so we put that together on the first night we arrived home so we are still working on the nursery.

Advice

Tell me your favourite stores that you are obsessed with shopping at (this may help other parents prepare for their new miracle).

I barely did any shopping at all! Everything was gifted, both new and second-hand (I personally love how soft the second-hand clothes are). I bought all the necessary items such as our cot, drawers, breast pump, bottles etc at Baby Bunting.

Do you have any tips for expecting mums?

Relax! Trust your partner and midwives to look after you. Make sure you rest, sleep and slow down especially during those last few weeks before baby arrives. Also, enjoy your bump! Your plans most likely won’t go to plan so just roll with it. Freezer meals are great to prepare in advance!

Do you have any tips and tricks for parents adjusting to parenthood in those early days?

Take photos! They won’t be clear memories, only flashes. Watch your bub and learn their cues. Listen to everyone’s advice and take back what works for you. Ignore the messy house; sit with your baby, take it all in and be kind to yourself! Your partner and baby are learning too so be kind and be a team! When your baby is upset, remember the 4xB’s; 1. Booby/bottle – are they hungry? 2. Bum – do they have a dirty nappy? 3. Body – Give them lots of cuddles and skin-skin contact. 4. Bed – are they tired?

Client Experience

How has your experience been with JC imagery and would you recommend Jodi to friends?

This is my second time with Jodi and she was just as amazing as the first photo shoot. Highly recommend her!

How did you feel about finding a photographer and how did Jodi make you feel?

Jodi is so professional, happy and just makes you feel very comfortable (as we all know photos can be a bit daunting)!

Is there a story surrounding your pregnancy? Has it been a breeze or has your little one made you work for it?

Being 38wks now, this babe is giving me a lot of kicks to ribs and a bit uncomfortable, but a pretty good pregnancy.

Have you found out whether you are having a boy or a girl? Or is it a total surprise?

Yes, my partner and I know. But shhh… It’s a secret for everyone else! 🙂

Tell me your favourite stores that you are obsessed with for maternity wear.

I found that in summer, I could wear a lot normal woman’s clothes- summer dresses were the best. Winter is harder and when you are just about to pop I don’t want to buy too much. So Kmart & Cotton On have been my favourite.

Have you started to prepare the baby’s nursery or are you going to wing it last minute?

Yes! We are all done, now we just need our bubba!

Do you have any tips for expecting mums?

It’s such an amazing/crazy experience, so enjoy it all, even the days where you’re sick… Your body is changing…it’s pretty amazing that you have a little mini you growing inside!

Olivia is just incredible and was such a dream to work with! I loved her beautiful little face and olive skin so much that I submitted this image to the AFNS AWARD which is an International Competition for Photographers in the field of Newborn & Maternity photography.

I received a notification shortly after to say that I have WON 1st place! I am still in shock and so humbled that my artwork was chosen by an expert jury!

I made this submission for personal growth with no expectation to actually win so this has definitely made my day!

To every single one of you that have chosen me to photograph your beautiful baby, I definitely wouldn’t have these amazing opportunities without you so THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart! x

Client Experience

How has your experience been with JC imagery and would you recommend Jodi to friends?

Fantastic! Yes I would!

What was the highlight of your photography session with JC imagery?

Seeing my baby girl posed in the beautiful props – she looked so cute in all of them!

Is there a story surrounding your pregnancy? Was it a breeze or did your little one make you work for it?

It was a breeze to begin with but became very difficult more towards the end of the last trimester.

How did you find out whether you were having a boy or a girl? Or was it a total surprise?

We couldn’t wait so we found out what we were having at the 20-week ultrasound!

How did you come up with your baby’s name? And did you have other names that you used while your new baby was still in the womb)?

We have always loved the names Olivia and Mahlia, but once she arrived, Olivia seemed to suit so we stuck with that.

If you have other children, how did they feel about becoming a big brother/sister?

We also have a little boy and he is almost 2 years old. He absolutely loves Olivia and always wants to hold her!

How far in advance did you prepare the nursery? Or did you wing it last minute?

We prepared it in advance, it was a very slow process… Haha

Do you have any tips for expecting mums?

Get as much sleep as you can, no matter what time of day!

Do you have any tips and tricks for parents adjusting to parenthood in those early days?

Sleep when your baby sleeps (if you don’t have other children), enjoy every moment and just do what works for you and your new baby!

The client Experience

How has your experience been with JC Imagery and would you recommend Jodi to friends?

My experience has been nothing short of amazing! Jodi has been so lovely throughout the whole process. I felt 100% comfortable handing little Noah over to her as it was so clear how caring she was. Throughout the shoot, she was so good with him and was amazing at settling him.

He’s quite a fussy baby so I was a little worried how the shoot would go, but with Jodi, he behaved so well! Definitely the baby whisperer. I’d definitely recommend her to anyone!

How did you find about finding a photographer and how did Jodi make you feel?

A friend tagged me in a post on Jodi’s Facebook page. I was absolutely over the moon when Jodi contacted me as we had been unable to organise a photographer before our baby Noah was born. If it weren’t for her, we wouldn’t have gotten those precious photos! Jodi definitely is the best of both worlds as her photos are absolutely spectacular and her packages were exactly what we were looking for. I am so grateful to have found her as we would have missed out on capturing those photos if it weren’t for her.

My Story

Is there a story surrounding your pregnancy? Was it a breeze or did your little one make you work for it?

I definitely did not have a smooth pregnancy! I didn’t have any major complications (luckily) but I was experiencing false contractions (Braxton Hicks) since about 18 weeks. It was definitely hard as being my first pregnancy, I had no idea how to tell the difference between those and real contractions.

Towards the end, I was at the hospital almost every week absolutely convinced I was in labour only to be told that I wasn’t! It wasn’t until my waters broke one night that I finally knew it was actually happening. Noah was also a very active baby- he kicked so hard that I actually had bruises on the outside of my stomach! He didn’t make it easy for me that’s for sure.

Highlights…

What was your favourite moment/highlight of your session?

My biggest surprise was how calm Noah was. The entire room was set up to make him comfortable – a fan heater, a shoosher machine and a heartbeat playing over the speakers. Noah absolutely hates being naked but Jodi had a way of keeping him settled. I actually went out and bought a fan heater which I turn on when I change his nappy and it calms him right down!

Did you find out whether you were having a boy or girl or was it a total surprise?

We found out we were having a boy at our 20-week scan. We are both quite impatient so couldn’t wait until he was born to find out!

How did you come up with your baby’s name? And did you have other names that you used while your baby was still in the womb?

Throughout the pregnancy, whenever I heard a name I liked, I saved it on a list on my phone and then would go through it with my partner. Any names that my partner didn’t like got deleted from the list and any names that he suggested that I liked got added in. It was a very short list by the end- we definitely did not agree on many names! My family nicknamed him “Froggy” as in my 12-week scan, his legs looked like little frog legs. After he started kicking me non stop, the nickname definitely fit!

Shopping…

Tell me your favourite stores that you are obsessed with shopping at (this may help other new parents to prepare for their new addition)…

My one stop shop has been Baby Bunting for all the essentials. For clothes, I love the Bonds zippy suits. They’re so easy to dress him in, great quality and Bonds often have 40% off sales so anytime that happened, I just bought up big.

How far in advance did you prepare the nursery? Or did you wing it last minute?

We started buying things at about the 12-week mark and just got everything bit by bit instead of all at once. We had the nursery fully set up by about 35 weeks. After Noah was born, we realised there was plenty that we forgot to buy though. I think that’s a good way to do it though- instead of buying too much and having things go to waste, it’s easy enough to send your partner out afterwards to get anything you may have forgotten.

Tips!

Do you have any tips for expecting mums?

Don’t just focus on what you need to buy for the baby- there’s plenty that you need for yourself too! When we got home, it was clear that I was very unprepared for breastfeeding. Who knew you’d need so much stuff? Nipple cream, breast pads, electric pump, nipple shields, hot and cold packs were all very much needed for me. I also realised I was severely lacking in nursing-friendly clothes. I’d recommend buying a few good quality maternity bras and then a heap of cheap ones too to wear to bed/around the house. Babies are messy eaters so you will be changing your clothes a lot more regularly than you think!

Do you have any tips and tricks for parents adjusting to parenthood in those early days?

I’d like a few tips myself to be honest- haha! I guess what has worked for us is taking turns to sleep… Noah is a bit of a difficult sleeper so the old saying “sleep when the baby sleeps” is a bit hard when the baby isn’t sleeping. I express a bottle every day and it’s on hand if I want to go to bed early or have a nap- my partner is able to feed Noah without waking me up so I can get a decent chunk of sleep. If we don’t end up using it then it goes into the freezer for another day.

I’d also suggest stocking up on snacks/finger food for when you’re breastfeeding and can’t use both hands. I have a container of biscuits next to the couch at all times in case I get hungry while feeding Noah. Even just premaking sandwiches and cutting up cheese, fruit etc ready to go is super handy when you’re starving but don’t have time to make lunch.
