My Experience at a Maternity & Newborn Workshop

My Experience at a Maternity & Newborn Workshop

I attended Anja McDonald’s Maternity and Newborn Workshop on the Gold Coast over the weekend and really wanted to share my personal experience with you all!

This workshop by far was the most enjoyable and educational experience I’ve ever had. Anja is incredibly humble, welcoming and open to teaching us her extensive knowledge about photography and how to run a successful business.

The reason why I decided to attend?

I feel that it is incredibly important throughout our career to expand our knowledge as much as possible and explore every avenue. I specifically wanted to focus on maternity posing using artificial light (as I have previously been a natural light photographer) and look at new business/marketing strategies. Anja’s workshop was a perfect choice.

An in-person workshop allows the opportunity to share an experience with other like-minded people who share your passion. It was great to make some new friends and have fun in the process! It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner or more experienced photographer because Anja ensures to spend time with each student individually too.

Along with learning different techniques to style and pose, Anja shared her business secrets and post-production tips which were extremely helpful! I have walked away from that experience with a business plan, so much more knowledge and an awesome goodie bag filled with products from my favourite vendors! Haha

Anja is so patient and supportive; she provides ongoing support to keep you on track even after the workshop has been completed which I find incredibly helpful. She truly wants everyone to succeed.

I am so passionate about providing my clients with the best experience and love to exceed their expectations, this is why Anja’s workshop is by far the best investment I have made for my career and I will continue to improve/update my skills and business regularly.

I recommend that you check out her mentoring program and workshop dates if you are looking to take your business and imagery to the next level. Here is the link for further information about mentoring/workshops with Anja: https://anjamcdonald.com.au/mentoring/

The client experience

How has your experience been with JC imagery and how did Jodi make you feel?

Excellent! Yes – we have told all of our friends and anyone who has commented on our photos. Jodi made us feel amazing – at ease, comfortable and relaxed. We had a lot of laughs during the shoot – at everyone’s expense! Haha

Is there a story surrounding your pregnancy? Was it a breeze or did your little one make you work for it?

Our baby girl was the boss from day 1. My partner Jason knew that I was pregnant before the test was positive. I was terribly sick for the first 5 months – which didn’t completely disappear through the remainder of the pregnancy. I could eat something one day then not be able to stomach it the next. I also had really swollen feet and hands!

About

Did you find out whether you were having a boy or a girl? Or was it a total surprise?

Total surprise! We found out when she was lifted up onto me – Jason had a hunch that she was a girl all along… My mum thought I was having a boy but changed her mind later on in the pregnancy.

How did you come up with your baby’s name? And did you have other names that you used while your new baby was still in the womb)?

‘Bubs’ and ‘little one’ was used while Tilly was in the womb… We chose two names; one for a boy and one for a girl… When our baby girl arrived, I really liked the name Tilly and so did Jason so that is what we went with!

How far in advance did you prepare the nursery? Or did you wing it last minute?

We just did bits and bobs throughout the pregnancy. The cot arrived after the birth of Tilly so we put that together on the first night we arrived home so we are still working on the nursery.

Advice

Tell me your favourite stores that you are obsessed with shopping at (this may help other parents prepare for their new miracle).

I barely did any shopping at all! Everything was gifted, both new and second-hand (I personally love how soft the second-hand clothes are). I bought all the necessary items such as our cot, drawers, breast pump, bottles etc at Baby Bunting.

Do you have any tips for expecting mums?

Relax! Trust your partner and midwives to look after you. Make sure you rest, sleep and slow down especially during those last few weeks before baby arrives. Also, enjoy your bump! Your plans most likely won’t go to plan so just roll with it. Freezer meals are great to prepare in advance!

Do you have any tips and tricks for parents adjusting to parenthood in those early days?

Take photos! They won’t be clear memories, only flashes. Watch your bub and learn their cues. Listen to everyone’s advice and take back what works for you. Ignore the messy house; sit with your baby, take it all in and be kind to yourself! Your partner and baby are learning too so be kind and be a team! When your baby is upset, remember the 4xB’s; 1. Booby/bottle – are they hungry? 2. Bum – do they have a dirty nappy? 3. Body – Give them lots of cuddles and skin-skin contact. 4. Bed – are they tired?

How has your experience been with JC imagery and would you recommend Jodi to friends?

Our experience with JC Imagery was amazing! From the very start, I felt comfortable with Jodi as she is so easy going, approachable and friendly. She made our sessions enjoyable and easy! I would highly recommend Jodi to other people without any hesitation and have been doing so already!

How did you feel about finding a photographer and how did Jodi make you feel?

I like to research everything I do, and after looking through the Albury Wodonga region for a photographer I felt very happy with my decision to go with Jodi. I felt 100% comfortable with her.

Is there a story surrounding your pregnancy? Was it a breeze or did your little one make you work for it?
I certainly could tell a story about this pregnancy. After 6 months of trying for our second baby I went to the doctor for a general checkup, and basically, it all started from there. I was sent for an ultrasound, which showed up my previous caesarean scar was widened, thin and weak. I was booked in to have surgery to fix the scar and told to stop trying for a baby as my uterus may rupture, however in this 2 week time period, I had fallen pregnant. So as you could imagine I was beside myself with worry, and uncertainty of being able to keep this baby. A much-wanted baby! From there we had scan after scan after scan (22 in total to be exact) to determine whether we would be able to keep it. Then told by one Obstetrician that we should terminate the pregnancy. Unhappy and devastated with that opinion, we sought a second opinion. To then we were referred to Melbourne. At this stage, we were 13 weeks along when Melbourne finally were confident in saying that we could go ahead with the pregnancy. However, it was high risk and further scans and monitoring were necessary. At each scan thereafter things seemed to be going well. We were advised that I could not go into labour as this would risk uterine rupture and that a caesarean would be needed at 35/36 weeks. As a result, this was a very stressful pregnancy which still came with all of the typical pregnancy symptoms; all day sickness, nose bleeds, heartburn to name a few. It was hard to enjoy this pregnancy as we were so uncertain of the outcome. Finally comes 36 weeks, and delivery day. I was so scared and nervous as to what was going to happen, and if the baby would need any assistance when delivered. But we can thankfully say that baby come out screaming, lungs working fine, and no assistance needed. We were so happy to meet our beautiful baby GIRL!!

How did you find out whether you were having a boy or a girl? Or was it a total surprise?

After a total of 22 scans, we decided not to find out the sex of the baby. I felt like I needed a good surprise after all of the stress, and I’m so glad as it was the best surprise ever!! A little sister to our other daughter!

How did you come up with your baby’s name? And did you have other names that you used while your new baby was still in the womb)?

This was extremely difficult. We had approx 20 girls names that we liked but could not agree on any!! Our baby girl went without a name for 4 days, until we finally decided on ‘Lily Belle’. I also wanted a flower as part of her name, as my first daughter is ‘Indi Rose’, so this just seemed fitting.

If you have other children, how did they feel about becoming a big brother/sister?

Our first born Indi was adamant we were going to have a girl and its name would be ‘Hayley’. We discussed the possibility that baby might be a boy, but she did not want a bar of it. We were a little concerned that if we did have a boy that she wasn’t going to be impressed at all. BUT, we had a girl and Indi was just over the moon, Her first reaction was priceless, she is so in love with her baby sister!

Tell me your favourite stores that you are obsessed with shopping at (this may help other parents prepare for their new miracle).

I love Baby Bunting, Baby Nest & Okes

How far in advance did you prepare the nursery? Or did you wing it last minute?

Second baby; it was completed about 2 days before delivery. First baby; ready and decorated beautifully months in advance. We were a lot busier this time around and not as much time to spend on setting up the nursery but we got there in the end.

Do you have any tips for expecting mums?

Enjoy the ride as much as possible because it goes very quickly and they do not stay little for very long.

Do you have any tips and tricks for parents adjusting to parenthood in those early days?

To be honest, I’m remembering it all over again, just go with the flow and things eventually become easier. Get sleep when you can. It’s hard work but totally worth it.

~ The Client Experience ~

How has your experience been with JC imagery and would you recommend Jodi to friends?

Yes! It was fantastic! I felt very relaxed and the process was so simple!

How did you feel about finding a photographer and how did Jodi make you feel?

It’s quite difficult to find a photographer that you feel comfortable with but Jodi made it very easy. She is very approachable, outgoing and loves babies so much!

Tell me about your baby’s personality.

Jaedyn is really lively, friendly and loves to discover new things! He is so active that he doesn’t like to sleep much either 🙂

Tell me your favourite stores that you are obsessed with shopping at or where you purchased their outfits for today’s session.

I find that City Beach, H & M, Next and Cotton On Kids have my favourite clothes! Jodi has a range of rompers in her studio and organised the outfits for today’s session – they were so gorgeous!

Do you have any tips for other parents preparing for their baby’s sitter session?

Make sure that your baby has had a nap before their session. That way they are more content and happy in the studio! Jodi organised/prepared everything so I didn’t have to organise a thing… Which is perfect when you have a very busy schedule like myself 🙂

Elsie – Baby Photography Session

Elsie – Baby Photography Session

I had such a lovely time working with Elsie and her big brother! She was extremely beautiful and I loved the props and colours that her mummy had chosen for her session. Love working with neutral/natural tones and is definitely becoming more popular. I had to upload a few favs from her gallery, enjoy! x

How has your experience been with JC imagery and would you recommend Jodi to friends?

Amazing! Would definitely recommend to my friends and family! Very straightforward experience with absolute clarity on what to expect.

How did you feel about finding a photographer and how did Jodi make you feel?

Jodi made the whole process easy and took the hard work out with her props, wraps and outfits. It can be hard to sift through the many photographers available – so glad I found Jodi!

Is there a story surrounding your pregnancy? Was it a breeze or did your little one make you work for it?

Elsie is my second child so pregnancy was exhausting but capturing sibling photos made it all worth it.

How did you find out whether you were having a boy or a girl? Or was it a total surprise?

I found out that we were expecting a girl at my 20-week ultrasound.

How did you come up with your baby’s name? And did you have other names that you used while your new baby was still in the womb)?

Elsie is my grandmother’s name who was unfortunately taken before her time and someone I were never able to meet.

If you have other children, how did they feel about becoming a big brother/sister?

Lenny was excited and knew he was getting a babysitter. He thinks Elsie is fabulous although struggles to share his parents.

Tell me your favourite stores that you are obsessed with shopping at (this may help other parents prepare for their new miracle).

I’m all about the online shopping! Baby Baby Online is great for swaddles and sleeping bags. Also Myer and Little Nest in Albury are amazing.

How far in advance did you prepare the nursery? Or did you wing it last minute?

I love to be organized so had the nursery prepared at 20 weeks.

Do you have any tips for expecting mums?

Trust your instincts, books aren’t always what is best for you!

Do you have any tips and tricks for parents adjusting to parenthood in those early days?

Always accept offers of help. Don’t be too hard on yourself and expect to limit those outings in the early days.

Jodi has been amazing, she has been very professional and helpful throughout the process from the initial enquiry to the photos and the collection. We couldn’t have asked for anything else. We would definitely recommend Jodi to anyone and will use her again in the future.

How did you feel about finding a photographer and how did Jodi make you feel?

The decision to get newborn photos was not decided till late in the pregnancy. Jodi was very accomadating and made us feel at ease and relaxed when in her studio.

How did you find out whether you were having a boy or a girl? Or was it a total surprise?

It was a total surprse!

How did you come up with your baby’s name? And did you have other names that you used while your new baby was still in the womb)?

Zara was decided very early on in the pregnancy, we couldn’t decide on a boys a name so were lucky we had a little girl.
