The client Experience

How has your experience been with JC Imagery and would you recommend Jodi to friends?

My experience has been nothing short of amazing! Jodi has been so lovely throughout the whole process. I felt 100% comfortable handing little Noah over to her as it was so clear how caring she was. Throughout the shoot, she was so good with him and was amazing at settling him.

He’s quite a fussy baby so I was a little worried how the shoot would go, but with Jodi, he behaved so well! Definitely the baby whisperer. I’d definitely recommend her to anyone!

How did you find about finding a photographer and how did Jodi make you feel?

A friend tagged me in a post on Jodi’s Facebook page. I was absolutely over the moon when Jodi contacted me as we had been unable to organise a photographer before our baby Noah was born. If it weren’t for her, we wouldn’t have gotten those precious photos! Jodi definitely is the best of both worlds as her photos are absolutely spectacular and her packages were exactly what we were looking for. I am so grateful to have found her as we would have missed out on capturing those photos if it weren’t for her.

My Story

Is there a story surrounding your pregnancy? Was it a breeze or did your little one make you work for it?

I definitely did not have a smooth pregnancy! I didn’t have any major complications (luckily) but I was experiencing false contractions (Braxton Hicks) since about 18 weeks. It was definitely hard as being my first pregnancy, I had no idea how to tell the difference between those and real contractions.

Towards the end, I was at the hospital almost every week absolutely convinced I was in labour only to be told that I wasn’t! It wasn’t until my waters broke one night that I finally knew it was actually happening. Noah was also a very active baby- he kicked so hard that I actually had bruises on the outside of my stomach! He didn’t make it easy for me that’s for sure.

Highlights…

What was your favourite moment/highlight of your session?

My biggest surprise was how calm Noah was. The entire room was set up to make him comfortable – a fan heater, a shoosher machine and a heartbeat playing over the speakers. Noah absolutely hates being naked but Jodi had a way of keeping him settled. I actually went out and bought a fan heater which I turn on when I change his nappy and it calms him right down!

Did you find out whether you were having a boy or girl or was it a total surprise?

We found out we were having a boy at our 20-week scan. We are both quite impatient so couldn’t wait until he was born to find out!

How did you come up with your baby’s name? And did you have other names that you used while your baby was still in the womb?

Throughout the pregnancy, whenever I heard a name I liked, I saved it on a list on my phone and then would go through it with my partner. Any names that my partner didn’t like got deleted from the list and any names that he suggested that I liked got added in. It was a very short list by the end- we definitely did not agree on many names! My family nicknamed him “Froggy” as in my 12-week scan, his legs looked like little frog legs. After he started kicking me non stop, the nickname definitely fit!

Shopping…

Tell me your favourite stores that you are obsessed with shopping at (this may help other new parents to prepare for their new addition)…

My one stop shop has been Baby Bunting for all the essentials. For clothes, I love the Bonds zippy suits. They’re so easy to dress him in, great quality and Bonds often have 40% off sales so anytime that happened, I just bought up big.

How far in advance did you prepare the nursery? Or did you wing it last minute?

We started buying things at about the 12-week mark and just got everything bit by bit instead of all at once. We had the nursery fully set up by about 35 weeks. After Noah was born, we realised there was plenty that we forgot to buy though. I think that’s a good way to do it though- instead of buying too much and having things go to waste, it’s easy enough to send your partner out afterwards to get anything you may have forgotten.

Tips!

Do you have any tips for expecting mums?

Don’t just focus on what you need to buy for the baby- there’s plenty that you need for yourself too! When we got home, it was clear that I was very unprepared for breastfeeding. Who knew you’d need so much stuff? Nipple cream, breast pads, electric pump, nipple shields, hot and cold packs were all very much needed for me. I also realised I was severely lacking in nursing-friendly clothes. I’d recommend buying a few good quality maternity bras and then a heap of cheap ones too to wear to bed/around the house. Babies are messy eaters so you will be changing your clothes a lot more regularly than you think!

Do you have any tips and tricks for parents adjusting to parenthood in those early days?

I’d like a few tips myself to be honest- haha!ย I guess what has worked for us is taking turns to sleep… Noah is a bit of a difficult sleeper so the old saying “sleep when the baby sleeps” is a bit hard when the baby isn’t sleeping. I express a bottle every day and it’s on hand if I want to go to bed early or have a nap- my partner is able to feed Noah without waking me up so I can get a decent chunk of sleep. If we don’t end up using it then it goes into the freezer for another day.

I’d also suggest stocking up on snacks/finger food for when you’re breastfeeding and can’t use both hands. I have a container of biscuits next to the couch at all times in case I get hungry while feeding Noah. Even just premaking sandwiches and cutting up cheese, fruit etc ready to go is super handy when you’re starving but don’t have time to make lunch.
